Group 2

The goal of this course is to familiarize students with a broad range of theoretical and practical perspectives on the strategy and organization of the multinational firm as global network.
Specifically, this course is concerned with the evolution, the strategy process, the formation of the organization structure and the communication strategy of the MNC. The student is expected to develop skills in evaluating international competitive strategies in multicultural environments, in designing alternative organizational forms for multinational firms, in applying communication strategies, in the use of international licensing, strategic alliances, merger & acquisitions, consortia, franchising and clusters, in identifying appropriate forms of market entry, and in evaluating alternative corporate governance structures in different international institutional environments.

Aims, contents and method of the course

Aims: The primary goal of this course is to familiarize students with a broad range of theoretical and practical perspectives on the strategy and structure of the global corporate firm. The course is concerned with the different strategy concepts and their applications to the multinational corporation (MNC).
Contents:
1. Strategic Management of Global Business
2. Corporate governance in global business
3. Mergers & Acquisitions
4. Outsourcing & Off-shoring
5. Strategic Networks & Global Business
6. The bargaining power perspective of global business
7. Culture and Global Business
Methods: The course will be organised following a lecture format characterising interactive discussions on the various aspects of global business. Students are expected to come prepared with the course material to be supplied through Moodle at beginning of the course. Students will write group assignment(s) that might be discussed/presented in the last of week of June.

Assessment and permitted materials

Written Exam: There will be a comprehensive written exam. to assess the learning accumulated during class discussions. The exam. will constitute of multiple choice questions, True/False questions and one essay question.
BRICS Project Assignment: Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa are being profoundly debated these days as the emerging economies with enormous opportunities for the global business organizations. The purpose of the BRICS project is to provide the students with an opportunity to examine the nature and dynamics of international business activity in these four markets. In this assignment, teams of 3-4 students will act as IB consultants to devise/propose a global strategy for a business organization doing well in Austria for anyone of the BRICS countries. The scope/size/origin of the organization does not matter - it could be as small as a retail chain like Coffee day or Türkis or as large as Siemens or Red Bull - what counts the most is the technical accuracy (i.e., how well did the team use the global business concepts learned in the class).
Public Lectures: Public lectures are an integral part of this course. In these lectures, experts from the relevant field of study held discussion on the various topics/aspects relating to the global business. Students are strongly encouraged to attend these public lectures. Besides, commendable knowledge, they could earn some bonus points. Group Assignment 30%
Quizzes/Class participation 10%
Minimum Requirements: For successful completion of the course, a student must secure at least 50% score in the written examination.
