Aims, contents and method of the course
This course aims at providing students with a basic understanding of the fundamental elements, aspects, and rules of international economic law with a focus on international trade law and the role of the World Trade Organization (WTO). Its basic principles will be described by reference to the respective articles in its trade agreements and case-law from the WTO dispute settlement system. The general exceptions (security, health, the environment,...) and the relationship between trade and investment will also be covered. After all, investment law has gained increasing attraction in recent years, in particular in connection with new free trade agreements such as NAFTA, CETA or TTIP.The last session will then deal with the principles of monetary law and the International Monetary Fund and state insolvency with a focus on the Argentina debt crisis.
