Aims, contents and method of the course

1. To introduce you to the basic concepts in strategic management and organizational theory that can be elaborated upon later in the Master level strategy classes.

2. To provide you with an introductory toolkit of frameworks and tools that can be successfully applied to analyze a firm’s strategy.

3. To provide you with an opportunity to further develop your skills in analytical thinking and problem solving in the business arena.

Assessment and permitted materials

1. Written closed form individual Final Exam at the end of the course – 50%
2. Participation in class (discussions, group assignments, attendance) – 20%
3. Written individual Home Assignments – 30%

Note: You are allowed to miss a maximum of 10% of the class, which sums up to about 1.5 hours for this course. Your attendance in the first session is mandatory!

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

You need to achieve an overall score of at least 50% to pass this course.

- Selected chapters from Grant, Robert M. (2013) Contemporary Strategy Analysis: Text and Cases, John Wiley & Sons (8th Edition).
- Basic concepts from topic-related journal articles
- Business cases analyzed during class

Reading list

The course is primarily based on the book of Grant, Robert M. (2013) Contemporary Strategy Analysis: Text and Cases, John Wiley & Sons (8th Edition). Additionally, business cases or related journal articles can be used to illustrate more clearly the basic concepts discussed in Grant (2013).
