    Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The course deals with the state budget, public credit and financial crises in historical retrospect from the early modern period to the present. The starting point is the consideration of the change in the tasks of the state and the financial resources required for this, which are raised through taxes and other levies, and are also financed through public credit.
Linked to this is also the consideration of the contribution of money, banking and stock exchange systems from the time of mercantilism to today's globalisation. The course imparts in-depth knowledge of economic history at an intermediate level and is also intended to offer students the opportunity to practise scientific research and presentation on a defined topic by writing a seminar paper.

    Assessment and permitted materials

Examination-immanent course, compulsory attendance at the lectures of the course leader with summary texts provided on the Moodle platform. Then the students have to search for literature, do research and write a preliminary "workshop version" on a specific topic. Individual supervision by the course leader. Then final formulation of the seminar paper, submission by the end of June or the end of September 2023.

    Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Personal participation in the lectures of the course leader with discussion, reading of the transmitted text passages as well as writing a workshop paper on a chosen special topic, which is to be developed into a seminar paper in consultation and discussion with the course leader (at least 15 pages).

    Examination topics

Examination-immanent course, in addition to lectures by the course leader, research activity in a seminar paper. Submission of a written seminar paper (at least 15 pages) after a prior literature search, factual research, rough draft / workshop version..
