Aims, contents and method of the course

The seminar is aimed at Master's students who are interested in studying forms of enterprises such as cooperatives and non-profit-organisations and in the concept of the social economy in an international context.

Cooperatives are based on principles such as solidarity, self-help, self-management, democratic corporate governance, etc. that have a long historical tradition. They have repeatedly proven their right to exist as an alternative form of enterprise and have also been able to successfully assert themselves in various crises (stock market crash, financial crisis, pandemic). The aim of the seminar is to show both the special characteristics of this form of enterprise and to demonstrate their contribution to important issues such as sustainability, energy/climate crisis, affordable housing etc. In addition, this course will expand the spectrum to include alternative forms of cooperation such as non-profit-organisations and social enterprises and place them in an international context.

In order to raise the students' awareness of the organisational and legal characteristics of these forms of enterprises, the seminar first provides a general theoretical introduction to the individual topics, which also includes reading and discussing articles. Subsequently, the students will focus intensively on the topics they have chosen (self-study), whereas introductory literature for the particular topics will be provided. Then the participants of the course will learn how to give and receive constructive feedback on the written seminar papers of their colleagues in the form of group peer reviews (feedback loops). A final group presentation of the results and a written assignment in the form of a final paper complete the course.

The topics are designed for group work (15 pages per person), but can also be completed as individual work in a slightly modified form. Due to the international context of the topics, both presentation and written assignment can be composed in German or English.

Assessment and permitted materials

The students' performance will be assessed as follows: participation (10% of the final grade), successful peer review of the group (10% of the final grade), group presentation of the research results (15% of the final grade) and the written assignment (final paper) (65% of the final grade).

The (nearly completed) final papers must be submitted by the end of November 2023 and will then be discussed by the students via mutual peer reviews. The final version of the final paper must be submitted by February 1st, 2024.

The use of AI tools (e.g. ChatGPT) for the production of texts is only permitted if they are expressly requested by the course leader (e.g. for individual work tasks).

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Compulsory attendance in the 1st session (5.10. 2023), 2 unexcused absences are permitted; participation, peer review, holding a group presentation, submission of a final paper (deadline: February 1st, 2024).

Furthermore, interest in the topics and the willingness to study the available literature is expected.

Assessment: Participation in discussions (10% of the final grade), group peer review (10% of the final grade), group presentation of research results (15% of the final grade), written assignment of the results (final paper) (65% of the final grade). For positive completion, all core elements of the course (participation, peer review, presentation and final paper) must be successfully completed: a total of at least 55% must be achieved.
