Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Concept of a queue; why queues exist and, what makes them long;
the M/M/1 and M/G/1 queueing single server models and mean value analysis, leading to the most important queueing formulas, such as Khinchtine-Pollaczek's.
Model of symmetric non-cooperative games and their symmetric Nash equilibria;
`To queue or not to go' will be looked at at length (unobservable/observable version).
Issue of regulation; regulating mechanisms; other qeueing related decision problems

Assessment and permitted materials

The students will be asked to read a research paper and answer a set of questions dealing with the model presented and with its performance measures.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Examination topics

- length biased sampling and the inspection paradox
- the M/M/1andtheM/G/1single server models
- self vs.social optimization in queues
- decision making in queues: to queue or not to queue, to purchase priority or not, to retry or not to retry
- regulating queues via tolls, contracts, priority selection, and queue regimes
