Aims, contents and method of the course

This lecture covers a selection of multimedia-related topics in the context of the World Wide Web, which is the largest Multimedia Information System in place today. A strong focus is on "metadata", which is key for efficient management of multimedia objects in any multimedia information system.

* The Architecture of the World Wide Web (an in-depth analysis)
* Data Exchange Formats (XML-based Standards)
* Data Exchange Architectures and Protocols (REST, WebServices, Atom, etc.)
* Multimedia on the Web (HTML5, Flash)
* Linking [Open] Data (RDF/S, OWL, SPARQL, SKOS, RDFa, etc.)
* Social Networks
* Human Computation & Social Search

Assessment and permitted materials

Written Exam.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

The aim of this lecture course is to given an in-depth understanding of the architecture of the World Wide Web with all its involved entities (data, protocols, users, etc.). Furthermore, the lecture will give insights into ongoing research activities in that field.
