Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Students will learn which threat scenarios can occur in the distributed systems communications and which solutions and approaches can be applied from the standpoint of Network Security. In that context, security goals ( Authentification, Confidetiality and Availability) will be presented and clarified. The students will get familiar with the software-technical solutions, such as application of cryptographical procedures, as well as hardware-based security technologies, e.g. Firewalls, Intrusion Detection systems and how these technologies can be used to protect their information.

The course is based on William Stallings' textbook 'Network Security Essentials' and additional content such as Web application security.

The extensive exercise section (lab assignments) teaches topics beyond network security basics:

* Focus on binary exploitation
* Feasible network attacks
* Lab exercises chaining together different vulnerabilities

Assessment and permitted materials

60% of the grade is based on the lab assignments, 40% theory

Examination topics

All contents that are being presented in VO ( lectures), as well as complete script( all exceptions will be announced accordingly), pictures and diagrams drawn on the board and oral clarifications of the lecturer and the book
