Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The large temple areas at Karnak in Upper Egypt, within the modern town Luxor are the topic of this lecture series. The extension of Karnak is one of the largest temple districts globally, and comprises several districts (district of Amun, of Mut and on Monthu, besides other buildings).
Historically the buildings are stretching over the very long period of more than 2 Millenia, starting in the 11th Dynasty until the Roman period, as well as few Christian relicts are preserved.
The target is to acquire a solid knowledge about the architecture of Karnak and to follow their development. The decoration and the equipment of the temples are an integrated part for the interpretation of the buildings, for the historical as well as for the religious component of the temples.
They students should be able to interpret and to discuss the buildings, their decoration and the objects in a scientific frame.
A selection of the demonstrated material will be provided via moodle.
UPDATE 30.4. due to the prolongation of the homelearning situation all materials are uploaded in moodle.
