Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Maly Trostenec, near Minsk, was one of the largest extermination sites of the Nazi German Reich. In 1942, 60,000 people were murdered here immediately after arrival by gas van or by gunshot. Among the victims were approximately 9700 Jewish Austrians. The seminar is part of an international cooperation on the culture of remembrance at the Maly Trostenec memorial site. With the support of experts, students from Minsk, Osnabrück and Vienna will develop a virtual tour of the Trostenez memorial site, which will enable a reflexive and multi-perspective examination of the site in a transnational context. This seminar focuses on the archaeological perspective. At the University of Vienna the seminar takes place in cooperation with the Inst. of Contemporary History (Kerstin von Lingen). Through an app (already developed) young people can independently explore the history of the memorial and extermination site. Thus, a tool is being developed that can be used at international youth encounters at the memorial site and elsewhere. In the parallel taught and thus interdisciplinary seminars, basic principles of scientific methods will be learned based on selected topics, which will result in an app / story board.
