Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Biological and palaeontological bascis of Archaeozoology/Zooarchaeology: anatomy, osteology, taphonomy; use of a comparative collection and of identification keys and literature. Overview of archaeozoological methods, assessment of primary and secondary data: identification of species/taxonomic groups, skeletal elements, age-at-death, sex, osteometry; identification of bone modifications (e.g. butchery marks) and bone tools; quantitative analysis;
Introduction into domestication and the history of domestic animals.
Practical exercises on selected animal bone samples in groupwork; defining research questions and goals in correspondence to archaeological settings: human dietary behaviour, butchery practices, economy,; interpreting archaeological contexts through faunal samples; ecology; archaeozoological field methods (excursion optional).

Assessment and permitted materials

Active participation and presence, and an oral individual talk with participants in the last week of june.

Wird bekanntgegeben, im Wesentlichen die vermittelten theoretischen Grundlagen zur Anatomie, Zoologie und Domestikationsgeschichte
