Aims, contents and method of the course

The lectures give an overview of the technical achievements of classical antiquity, based on literary, epigraphic and archaeological evidence. The focus is not so much on the history of technology, as on practicalties ('How did it work?') and aspects of cultural history.
The main topics are: Sources and fundamentals of Greek and Roman engineering, construction, hydrotechnology, mining and smelting.

Assessment and permitted materials

Oral exam in the form of a conversation that will show if the content of the lectures has been understood.
