Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
The determination of raw materials used for the production of stone tools is crucial for the interpretation of archaeological evidence. Raw materials suitable and sought for stone tool production were not always locally available, hence provenance studies are an important step for the analysis of lithicassemblages. Raw material determination and provenance studies are the gateway to a fuller understanding of resource management strategies involving the procurement, use and distribution of lithic resources. The lecture will provide students with fundamental and practice-oriented insights into the topic, and analytical methods for determining the origin of stone tools will be discussed. The main goal of the course is to enable students to correctly determine lithic find material based on the acquired skills. The lecture will be in German.
