The aim of the course is to acquire the ability to independently research and write a scientific paper in the field of research history.
To this end, the course is divided into:- an introductory lecture: short outline of Austrian prehistoric research until 1918 (pioneer period with intensive excavation activities in the Austrian area of the Habsburg Monarchy, i.e. from today's perspective on an international level, institutions, prehistorians), presentation of the source situation (archives), basics of the procedure (research, evaluation, literature, citation, historical designations of localities).- Practical work in the Prehistoric Department of the Natural History Museum using selected examples in the following steps:
1a- History of the NHMW, the PA and its protagonists.
1b- Familiarisation with the archives of findings and archival material respectively
1c- Visit to the library of the PA, getting to know the "older literature".
1d- Visit to the depot and the display collection (excavation material from the period up to 1918)2- Practical work on the basis of individual examples starting from a find site, a find object, a prehistorian, etc. The students learn the correct handling of archival material, locating the relevant archival material in the archives of finds, selecting it from the relevant holdings, evaluating it, supplementing it with contemporary literature and incorporating the find material, as well as the basic requirements for the written presentation (publication) of the results achieved (transcribing, citing, image material, etc.).
