Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Although the term globalization has become a buzzword only since the 1990s, it is now a very frequently used concept in the social sciences and is also present in the broader public discourse in the world and in Europe (Ritzer 2010). However, a deeper the historical perspective is often missing in these debates (Therborn 2000). The historical approach is important because it offers a long-term perspective for locating and understanding globalization. Globalization is not a new phenomenon, but can be traced back to at least the end of the 19th century. According to many researchers, even much earlier (Osterhammel 2005). The deepening of international economic, cultural and other relations was repeatedly interrupted by opposing processes. In certain periods, the borders of states were again more difficult to cross, which is also referred to as territorialization and was demanded by anti-global movements (Arrighi 1994; Taylor 1994; Maier 2000; Zarah 2023).
The changing periods of globalization and territorialization obviously had a fundamental impact on political and social development in Hungary and Central Europe in the 19th and 20th centuries. The Guided Reading 'History of Globalization in Hungary in Comparative Perspective' offers a comprehensive overview of the influences and effects of globalization in the history of Hungary. Students will explore the different phases of globalization in this region from the Habsburg monarchy through the interwar period to the socialist period. This will be based on classical texts of globalization theories as well as recent publications analysing the history of globalization in Hungary and guest lectures in English and German by Hungarian colleagues on this topic. Passive knowledge of German will be sufficient to take part in this seminar, you can speak English in class.
