Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Serial data, their analysis and presentation constitute an important methodological base for historical investigations, especially in economic and social history. The workshop introduces into the practices of working with this kind of quantitative data. After a presentation and discussion of the origins and the epistemological status of such data and their use in history, based on the reading of exemplary texts, simple methods of analysis and presentation will be taught and exercised. The participants have to establish several minor exercises using data provided by the lecturer or easily accessible through databases. Acquaintance with the calculation software Microsoft-Excell is expected and necessary.
