Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
The course gives a problem-oriented survey over the period from around 400 to 1500 AD and the development of Europe in this time and tries to consider the most fundamental social, cultural and political aspects of the medieval world.
Assessment and permitted materials
A final written exam of 90 minutes at the end of term based on the course, a textbook, and additional readings. The exam can be redacted in English, German, or French. Experience warns that students who do not listen to the lectures (either in class or through streaming) stand a poor chance of passing the class. The mastery of the textbook is a sine-qua-non for passing the exam (the part of the exam based on the textbook is eliminatory)
Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
Basic knowledge of European history in the Middle Ages, with a sense of how historians think and approach problems.
Examination topics
Lecture with additional readings, questions during lectures or through email welcome.
