Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
This unit examines civil wars in Europe in the 20th century - Ireland, Austria, Spain and Greece. In the preliminary talks by the lecturer, common features of civil wars and their comparability will be examined, then follows an analysis of the civil wars under examination. Special attention will be paid to how civil wars affect societies for decades afterwards, even into the present time.
Assessment and permitted materials
The final note is compiled as follows: attendance 10%, participation in discussion 10%, oral presentation 20%, written essay 60%. The essay is to be footnoted and paginated. Its length is (1 1/2 spacing) 10 pages for MA students, 8 pages for BA students.
Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
To show how civil wars originate, either at the end of a period of armed conflict against a foreign presence or because of social tensions, whether they are primarily driven by ideology or not, if the degree of popular participation in the civil war fighting is an important factor and so on. Another consideration is whether the appellation "civil war" is accurate in the cases under scrutiny.
Examination topics
After 3-4 talks by the lecturer, students will make an oral presentation.
