Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
This introductory lecture discusses central research questions of contemporary European history in their global context. It starts from international relations and imperial settings on the eve of the First World War and explains in a passage through the 20th century central political, socio-economic and social trajectories that are relevant for understanding the historical development of our present. Special attention is paid to transnational research perspectives in order to trace interconnectedness and globalization processes and to overcome nation-centered narratives.
Assessment and permitted materials
Written 90-minute exam (digitally via Moodle). Examination mode: Open questions by means of an examination sheet for download. Comprehension questions (no multiple choice questions!), which must be answered in complete sentences (no keywords!). Examination in open-book format: Aids (manuals, aids provided by the instructor) are allowed, but must be cited (rules of good scientific practice). This applies in particular to online resources in order to be able to check their scientific validity. Secondary sources that are not publicly accessible (e.g. external transcripts, external examination papers) are not citable and may not be used during the examination.

Familiarity with key political and social developments in the 20th/21st centuries on a European and global scale. Knowledge of important key concepts of contemporary historical research. 50% of the questions have to be answered correctly.
