Aims, contents and method of the course

This course offers an introduction into the basics of the historiography of global history. Starting with the "enlightened" idea of an Universal History in the 18th century, we will give a review on historic materialism, positivism, the impact of social sciences in history after 1945, theories on imperialism, the world-system approach and the recent debates on post-colonialism. Guest lecturers will contribute with specific approaches of major world regions to global historiography.
Special readings for every unit of this course will be provided in German and English.
