Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

European expansion in the Indian subcontinent and multiple forms of interactions with the Indian Ocean world would be the main focus of the course. It will make a survey of European encounters with the indigenous powers and trace the course of manipulations, diplomacy and politics involved in establishment of their bases in the regions of Indian Ocean. Methodological questions related to placing of Indian Ocean in the global world will be taken up. Primarily, the cases of Portuguese, Dutch, French and English in the Indian Ocean shall be discussed.
Accounts of travellers, missionaries, ambassadors and merchants of Portuguese, Dutch, English origin.
Mughal (Mogul) chronicles, regional texts from multiple principalities of the Indian subcontinent and Indian Ocean world.

Assessment and permitted materials

The students will be assessed based on their consistent participation in the class discussions and submission of written tasks when asked for.
