Aims, contents and method of the course

This seminar offers an in-depth exploration of the population geography of Southeastern Europe. Through a historical perspective, students will examine major population shifts that have shaped the region, placing the Balkans within the broader context of European population geography. The course will address key processes such as mass migrations, religious conversions, and the distribution of population density over time and space, highlighting their long-term impacts on the region's demographic structure. A critical aspect of the course involves analyzing primary sources from the Ottoman period, with a focus on assessing the reliability and biases in historical population data. Additionally, the seminar introduces students to innovative methods from Digital Humanities (DH), enhancing their ability to conduct comprehensive data analysis. By the end of this course, students will have a deeper understanding of the significance of population geography in both historical and contemporary contexts. They will also develop their analytical skills and learn to effectively use digital tools, preparing them for advanced research in historical geography and related fields.

Assessment and permitted materials

Regular attendance and active participation are crucial aspects of this undergraduate proseminar. Students are expected to arrive prepared, having thoroughly engaged with the assigned readings, which may include primary sources or scholarly secondary literature. The goal is to foster meaningful dialogue and encourage critical thinking during class discussions. In addition to participation, each student is required to deliver one oral presentation during the semester. The topic for this presentation will be chosen by the student in close consultation with the instructor. The presentation serves as a precursor to the final seminar paper, offering a preliminary exploration of the research, arguments, and insights that will be further developed in the written work. This presentation provides an opportunity for students to receive constructive feedback from both the instructor and their peers, helping to refine their arguments and methodological approaches before final submission. As a capstone project for the course, students must submit a final seminar paper. Throughout the semester, students will receive guidance in selecting an appropriate topic, identifying relevant literature, structuring their arguments, and developing a theoretical framework and methodology.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

The submission of a final seminar paper is mandatory. The final grade consists of the following components:
- Regular attendance and participation in discussions (30%)
- Oral presentation (20%)
- Final seminar paper (50%)
