Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
What are the Digital Humanities? This course is an introduction and overview of the field, intended for BA students whatever their subject background. We will look at the relationship between computational analysis, humanistic theory, and hermeneutics by considering a set of example projects and applications in detail. We will also touch on more practical and ground-laying aspects of the digital humanities such as the representation of cultural artifacts, and particularly texts, within the digital domain. By the end of the course students should have a good understanding of how we formalize and model concepts from the humanistic disciplines into the digital domain as well as the limitations of these methods.
Assessment and permitted materials
Assessment will be by written examination at the end of the course.
Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
Students will be tested on their understanding of the material presented here, including the screencasts, the experience they might have gained from relevant exercises, and the readings listed under the "Key Readings" header in the course Moodle. Minimum passing grade is 51%.
