Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
The course offers an overview of the main cultures which ruled over Inner and Northeast Asia from the 3rd century BC till the 20th century. The focus of the seminar lies on processes of empire formation and on the mutual influences of these Inner Asian cultures with their neighbors in Eurasia. The seminar is organized around a range of topics such as military techniques, imperial ideology, administrative structures, cultural and religious exchange, materiality and artifacts, epic and literary traditions. Students will also be guided through the main secondary and primary sources for the study of these cultures, and the methodological issues related to them.
