Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

In the eighties of the last century political, religious, and ethnic problems consolidated in the "SFRY" to existential conflicts and crises. These led to the disintegration of this political system and to the creation of independent states during the nineties.
These secessions were the result of a series of wars that dragged on for over a decade: first, the so-called ten-day war in Slovenia (1991), then the Croatian War of Independence (1991-1995), the Bosnian War (1992-1995), the Croatian-Bosnian war as part of the Bosnian war, the war for Kosovo (1999) and the Albanian uprising in Macedonia (2001).

In this Forschungsseminar strategies and projects will be designed, examplarily implemented and evaluated, in order to examine the genesis, the history, and the long-term effects of these wars, which were partly carried out with great cruelty. These issues contribute directly to the research complex "Cultures of memory in the 20th and 21st centuries in Central and Southeast Europe" at the Franz Vranitzky Chair for European Studies (see: http://franzvranitzkychair.univie.ac.at/forschung/kulturen-des-gedaechtnisses/).

Aim of the course is to develop manageable research projects and to carry them out as well as discuss their results and to contextualize. The integration in an ongoing international and interdisciplinary research project proves not only a scientific but also a social and political relevance of the work in the Forschungsseminar.
