Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

2018 the German price for the best book of the year (Deutscher Buchpreis) was awarded to Inger-Maria Mahlke for her novel "Archipel". It tells the history of Europe of the "long" 20th century from the peripheral perspective of the Spanish island Tenerife. Parting from reading this novel we will approach Spanish history and discuss it against the backdrop of the wider European context. Among others, we will discuss international trade relations and governance, the processes of creating the nation-state and biopolitics, we will dip into the history of the "big ideologies" of the 20th century, the shifts in center-periphery dynamics after the end of World War II and, finally, talk about the previous economic crisis (2008) with the responses of young people, as in indignados and occupy Wallstreet.
Apart from this journey through the history of the 20th century in Europe we will also consider the different possibilities novels and academia have to access history.
It is mandatory to read the novel as well as the extensive seminar literature which will be partly in English partly in German. Sufficient command of both languages is, therefore, essential for passing this course. People who are able to read Spanish texts are very welcome.
The course language will be German but can be changed to English if the participants feel comfortable with that.
