Aims, contents and method of the course

Due to close and multi-faceted connections music and emotion have been lively discussed since the enlightenment. After an introduction in the recent historical and musicological approaches for studying emotions, the seminar will deal with emotions which have been particularly often ascribed to music in the 18th and 19th century: melancholy, love, passion and mourning. We hope that the seminar will also bring you a lot of joy.
Please complete the reading of the initial literature BEFORE the first session in March 7 and propose there the topic you would like to deal with in your research and your bachelor thesis (other students can take part in the seminar as well, but the teaching format is set up for subsequently writing a BA-thesis)

Assessment and permitted materials

Regular attendance (on site! We will transmit the session via Zoom, but we expect from online participants additional compilations of the literature of each session with a length of 2-3 pages)
Reading and interpretation of the literature and sources in the syllabus
Presentation(s) of secondary literature
Research based BA-thesis (or extended research paper)
