Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The focus of the course is the BA thesis. Therefore, the course primarily aims at the ability to write formally correct, clearly structured, scientifically argued as well as substantively and methodologically defensible papers (including English abstracts). Students are able to independently read into specific subject areas and are proficient in various analog and digital research, writing and presentation techniques. They are able to identify and process appropriate source material and consult relevant research literature in order to present their own theses and questions in coherent exposés, from which the BA theses will emerge.

"Democracy in the Modern Era" is deliberately set as a broad content framework, as you are expected to develop your topic individually. We will work together on the content-related basics of the framework topic, as well as the basics of a small scientific paper (=BA thesis). You will present your work in the last third of the semester. With regard to the BA thesis, ‘modern times’ is understood here in the sense of the epoch designation ‘modern history’ primarily as the period from 1450 to 1850, whereby the period up to 1914 can be included. In the seminar, the time frame is extended to the 1970s.

Examination topics

This is an exam-immanent course. Therefore, all performances refer to the contents of the course provided in Moodle.

Reading list

Literature on the topic is available in Moodle; researching literature is also part of scientific work.

Hans Vorländer, Demokratie. Geschichte, Formen, Theorien, 3rd, revised edition, Munich 2019 (= C.H. Beck Wissen 2311).
Bernard Crick, Democracy. A Very Short Introduction, Oxford 2002 (= Very Short Introductions).

Wolfgang Schmale (ed.), Schreib-Guide Geschichte. Schritt für Schritt wissenschaftliches Schreiben lernen, Vienna / Cologne / Weimar 2006 (= UTB 2854).
Friederike Neumann, Schreiben im Geschichtsstudium, Opladen / Toronto 2018 (= Schreiben im Studium 5).

As the titles make clear, these are 'only' first introductions, but they are nevertheless highly recommended. More comprehensive references will then be provided in the Moodle course.
