Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
An excellent knowledge of English and German (both spoken and written) is a prerequisite for this course, which will be conducted primarily in English. We will examine the history of the nature and development of government in early modern Europe between the Thirty Years War (1618-48) and the outbreak of the French Revolution (1789), especially with regard to the great powers (France, England/Great Britain, Russia, Austria, Prussia, Spain, etc.). Particular consideration will be given to the pre-conditions as well as to the political, economic, social, and institutional consequences of the intensification and expansion of state power. Because this process affected all sections of the population and increasingly made the dynastic (central) state a general point of reference, the early modern state has traditionally been considered the immediate forerunner of modern government.
