Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

This course offers an overview of Chinese history between the 6th and the 17th
centuries. Imperial China will be addressed specifically as part of broader Eurasian
and global dynamics. By looking at people, goods, ideas and their circulation within
and across the borders of the Chinese realm, the course will examine the forces that
shaped the history of this region between the middle ages and early modernity.
The course is organized around four sessions,
arranged chronologically following the dynastic sequence of Chinese imperial history.
In each session, topics treated will ask how Chinese history was entangled with
broader Eurasian developments up to the time of modern global connections. This
double arrangement of the course has the purpose of providing a chronological
overview of the events which shaped imperial China, while testing varying scales of
time and space serving the understanding of this period of Chinese history.

The seminar will be based on weekly readings in primary and secondary sources (in English)
and discussions in class. Students are required to actively participate in the class discussions
