Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
The changes in state, economy and society during the 19th century extended the reach of the state's grip on life and work of its subjects, affected the images of self and others held by members of different social groups and led to new social and national tensions. Normative notions of decent, conformist behavior were influenced by these developments, as was the development and functioning of a specialized organization to maintain political and social order. In this seminar, we will use secondary literature and primary sources to reconstruct these developments in order to gain a better understanding of the interplay between social, political, and cultural changes on the one hand and state action on the other.
