Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
The aim of this course is to introduce students to recent secondary literature on the history of political and judicial corruption, a topic that has become increasingly popular during the last 25 years amongst historians interested in many different time periods and regions. Readings will include general theorizations of corruption in history as well as more focused studies drawn from ancient, medieval and modern history and covering not only Europe but also its colonies and other parts of the globe. Students will learn how to analyze and evaluate historical arguments through the close reading of secondary scholarship. Readings will be in English and German.
Assessment and permitted materials
Course requirements: 1) short writing assignments based on the readings; 2) participation in weekly classroom discussions; 3) final oral presentation.A student may have 1 excused absence. In the case of a 2nd excused absence, an additional written assignment is required. A student who misses 3 class sessions can only in exceptional cases receive a positive evaluation in the course.
Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
Grading scale for the course (max. 100 points total): 50% participation in classroom discussions; 25% short writing assignments; 25% final oral presentation.1 (very good) = 100-90 points
2 (good) = 89-81 points
3 (satisfactory) = 80-71 points
4 (sufficient) = 70-60 points
5 (insufficient) = 59-0 points
