Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
This GR will introduce students to the historiography and the history of political thought in Britain and the United States. We thus examine a variety of representative and still relevant texts and documents which will be provided on MOODLE from October 9, 2015. All classroom discussions and the presentation of the topic selected will be held in English, and the written weekly assignments will have to be written and submitted in English.
Assessment and permitted materials
This GR will be taught in an interactive manner, and students are expected to fully participate in reading and discussing the texts and documents. - Grading is based on regular class attendance (students will not miss class more than twice!) and the quality of classroom discussion (20%), individual presentation of a selected topic (35%), and the weekly written assignments (45%). In December 2015 there will be an individual consultation with each student (feed-back session - mandatory!).
Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
After successfully completing this GR, students will be familiar with representative texts and documents, and they will have achieved a basic knowledge of various schools and movements in British and American Historiography and Political Thought.
Examination topics
Students will carefully read, study, and discuss a variety of selected documents and scholarly articles. For the weekly assignments questions will be addressed to the provided texts and documents; presentations by students will illustrate and illuminate the historical background of the texts.IMPORTANT NOTICE: No electronic devices are permitted in class - no computers, tablets, mobile phones, etc. This will facilitate for students to focus on discussions and debates in class without being distracted or disturbed. This prescription is certainly not intended to limit or restric the activities of students in class, but trather to enable them to fully participate in and concentrate on classroom activities.
Reading list
The texts and documents we are going to read and discuss in class will be provided on MOODLE normally two weeks ahead of the class unit in question.
