Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Historical series of price and wage data are of high relevance in the analysis of past economic and social relations and processes. They have been systematically collected and edited by historians since the end of the 19th century. Furthermore, many archives still contain a lot of unedited material for the collection of these kind of data which enables students to establish local series by themselves in the context of this seminar. Methods of collection, treatment and presentation of this kind of data are well established and theories for the interpretation are still a matter of controversy.
The research seminar, which is linked to a research project on prices and wages in Vienna and Salzburg in the late medieval and early modern period, aims to enable and to guide the participants in the collection (out of manuscript sources) and interpretation of such data series. It provides at its beginning an introduction into the reading of relevant source material, the methodical treatment of the collected data and its interpretation. Participants are required to write and present a seminar paper based on self-collected data.
Knowledge and proficiency in MS-Excel is required for successful participation.
