Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Methods in Global History and Global Studies are plentiful, diverse, and overlapping. An academic text's topic and theory (concepts) determine the applicable methodology. This intrinsic correlation is fundamental for successful text production.
Historical methodology includes several key components, including source criticism, the use of multiple sources to validate historical claims, the analysis of cause-and-effect relationships, the interpretation of historical events, and the use of historical context to understand the past better.
Nevertheless, theories and methods themselves require source criticism. Therefore, we critically assess all possible Global History and Global Studies techniques using ChatGPT, etc. KI-based tools are as indispensable for knowledge production as Wikipedia has become. Thus, it would be naïve to ignore these possibilities.
With critical source assessment, we will use the core method of practical history research to understand the possibilities and limits of KI-generated texts.

The partly online, partly onsite course will provide the space to discuss individual research brought up by the students. That requires a serious engagement in class and personal study, which will be subjected to weekly debates. No final papers must be prepared, but assignments will be required for Moodle discussions and class discussions.
In any case, we will work on questions that come up during the student’s academic learning process.
No exemptions will be made from the rule that students must not miss more than four hours (two units) per semester. If a student misses more than four hours for any reason, he/she will not be graded.
