Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Eastern Europe witnesses a centuries-long presence of Muslim societies. Although the various autochthonous Muslim groups have different roots and, thus, differ in languages, customs, and practices, this course aims to provide an overview of the history of Muslim communities stretching from Poland to Central Asia, and from Belarus and Lithuania to the Balkan peninsula. Thereby, it starts chronologically with the Islamization of the Golden Horde as well as the Ottoman conquest of Southeastern Europe introducing Islam to the region. The main focus lies, however, on the 19th and the 20th centuries, and we will read sources and literature on different aspects of the history of Muslim societies in Eastern Europe. This includes texts on religion, legal systems and cultures, imperial and colonial rule, intercultural encounters as well as women’s and gender history.
Methodologically, we will practice in this course a critical reading as well as the evaluation and discussion of historical sources and texts. The course participants are requested to read and prepare weekly course readings, which will be available on Moodle. The reading texts will be critically reflected and discussed in plenary sessions and occasionally in small groups. In addition, the course participants should give a short presentation and complete three writing assignments.

Assessment and permitted materials

Regular attendance during the digital and/or on-site sessions is a prerequisite for the final evaluation. Max. 2 absences are allowed, but they have to be announced to the course instructor before the sessions. Further absences will result in compensatory assignments and may result in a negative grade.

The assessment is based on the following criteria:
- active participation in the discussions in class based on prior preparation of the weekly readings
- group presentation on one of the topics discussed in class
- 2 summaries on two different texts discussed in class (consisting of 2,000-3,000 characters)
- review on one text discussed in class (4,000-6,000 characters)

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

All assessment criteria mentioned above will be assigned a score (active class participation: 0-20 points, group presentation: 0-20 points, 2 summaries: 0-15 points each, review: 0-30 points). For a positive evaluation, the minimum number of points must be achieved for each assessment (active class participation: min. 9 points, group presentation: min. 9 points, summary: min. 8 points, review: min. 15 points). For the final evaluation, all points are added up and grades are assigned according to the following scale:
0-48 points: 5 (unsatisfactory/failed)
49-62 points: 4 (adequate)
63-76 points: 3 (satisfactory)
77-90 points: 2 (good)
91-100 points: 1 (very good)

Examination topics

There is no final exam for this course. The students’ assessment is based on the criteria mentioned in the sections “assessment and permitted materials” and “minimum requirements and assessment criteria”.
