Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Actor-network theory (ANT) is one of the most discussed theoretical and methodological approaches of our time. The actor concept of ANT, which has been extended beyond human beings, is considered by many to be an epistemological provocation. However, the approaches of ANT go far beyond this and can neither be reduced to stories of objects supposedly brought to life nor to the work of Bruno Latour. Despite the analysis of historical objects by some actor-network theorists, however, historicity remains a kind of blind spot in the approach. The methods course takes this as an opportunity to demonstrate the possibilities and limitations of ANT for historiographical practice.

Based on the reading of important "founding documents", students will first work out together what exactly the ANT approach consists of, in order to then pursue in depth in which way and with which results it has been applied so far. This will enable the students to apply the approach in their own work.

Assessment and permitted materials

Performance assessment will be based on the following sub-performance:

- participation in discussions, including various forms of feedback for other seminar participants.
- presentation
- essay

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Compulsory Attendance. Two absences will result in a written compensation assignment; three absences will result in a failing grade for the course. All partial performances must be completed on time and in full.

Assessment standard: participation in discussion: 20%, presentation: 30%, essay: 50%.

Examination topics

This is an exam-immanent course. Therefore, all performances refer to the contents of the course provided in Moodle.
