The guided reading class will discuss the interplay between social, political, cultural, and epistemic change in the period between the revolution of 1848 and he begin of the First World War. The main focus will be on the Habsburg monarchy and its scientific cultures, on the impact of institutional restructuring through political actors, on scientific persona and on exchange across national, territorial, and ethnic boundaries.

Aims, contents and method of the course
The guided reading class will discuss the interplay between social, political, cultural, and epistemic change in the period between the revolution of 1848 and he begin of the First World War. The main focus will be on the Habsburg monarchy and its scientific cultures, on the impact of institutional restructuring through political actors, on scientific persona and on exchange across national, territorial, and ethnic boundaries.
Assessment and permitted materials
Regular attendance and conticutions to the debate; several small essays
Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
The guided reading class will discus the main secondary sources on the history of science and culture in the time period between the revolution of 1848 and the begin of World War I. The class will engender a dialogue between classical works and recent publications in order to foster a more differentiated understanding of these developments.
Examination topics
Participants in this class are required to attend regularly and to contribute to the discussions in class. Small written essays on specific aspects of the discussion will provide an opportunity to deepen competences.
