Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

'Reading by Listening’
... to all those who read or listen to this letter (also meant: this document) ... (legentibus seu audientibus)
This formulation is almost an integral part of documents and letters; whenever, at least it cannot be assumed that all parties involved (to whom it may concern) can actually read the document by themselves.
We want to pursue various questions in this SE
1) What is written down – why does the content have to be written down?
2) Who writes down –
3) what in a document is relevant for those who cannot read and write by themselves?
4) Who are the persons ‘be concerned’?
5) Does the group change from the Early to Late Middle Ages; what does that depend on?
5) Languages and Translations used during the Middle Ages -
6) "Read" - --> read aloud - read still -
