English will be working language in class. Primary sources will be provided in English and German translation. For the written assignments and the discussion in class either language is welcome.
The Guided Reading covers medieval european primary sources and historiography. It is recommended to attend simultaneously VO History of the Middle Ages (Philippe Buc), which will provide context. Together, the two courses build up to a fuller view of the European Middle Ages.

Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
Reading and analysis of primary sources, including: Sources on the Conversion of Constantine, Beowulf, Gregory of Tours, the Song of Roland, inquisition records, ... Some important historiographical texts will also be read and discussed.
Assessment and permitted materials
Attendance, participation in discussion, and the regular writing assignments.
Out of 100 pts two-thirds are acquired through the regular writing assigments. The rest is acquired through participation in class. A minimum of 51 pts is required for passing the course.
Presence in class is mandatory ("prüfungsimmanente Lehrveranstaltung").
You may be absent in max. two classes. Absence does not liberate you from writing the assignments.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
To give the students some sense of the breadth of sources available to the historian of medieval Europe, introduce them to source analysis, and introduce them to some key controversies and modes of explaining historical phenomena of the Middle Ages.

Readings, weekly writing assignments, discussion.
