Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
This course is a complement to the VO "Further Historical Approaches: The Christian Near East", and it is strongly recommended that students attend those lectures as well.Students will be introduced to a wide range of translated source material for the history of the Near East, from the beginning of its Christian era in the 4th century up to the fall of the Armeno-Frankish Kingdom of Cilicia in the late 14th century. The texts are taken from historical sources written originally in Greek, Armenian, Syrian or Slavonic. The aim of the course is to familiarise students with the peculiarities of the different historiographical traditions in the Near East, and to offer practice in comparative source analysis.
Assessment and permitted materials
Preparation of the weekly readings; attendance and active participation in class discussions; regular short written essays.
Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
Nine short (900–1200 words) essays to be submitted during the semester (90%); satisfactory participation in class (10%).
