Religions and premodern war in comparative perspective

The seminar´s theme is how religions shape warfare in the premodern world. Students will specialize in a specific area (including western European Christendom, Byzantium, Armenia, precolumbian Mexico, Japan, China, the mediterranean Islamic world). Each student will establish a bibliography on his/her chosen area (with initial pointers on the part of the instructor). The seminar paper will consist in a review essay centering on an expert scholar´s written contribution, which the student will locate in this historiographic tradition. The seminar paper involves a mandatory first draft and rewrite of this first draft.

The seminar paper involves a mandatory first draft and rewrite of this first draft.- To gain expertise in one cultural/religious area. Reading, writing, and discussion based learning.

One literature review, plus (as final paper) a review essay (first version and final version)
