Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Habsburg Pop - The History of Popular Music in the Late Habsburg Empire

The Habsburg Empire is known above all for its "classical" music and a small number of composers from Haydn to Schönberg. This seminar will focus on popular music and genres such as the Waltz, Polka, Military Music, Operetta and Songs from Vienna and other parts of the empire. Hence, we will also deal with markets, social functions and low brow pubic institutions of music. You have fairly free choice for your research topics, which could be about single composers (the "classical" ones were also very popular in their times), places where music was performed, genres of music etc. If you have knowledge in other languages than German, it would be welcome for your research (but it is not a prerequisite), you can also write your paper in various languages of the former Habsburg Empire.
