Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

From the first ‘description of souls’ ordered by Maria Theresia in 1753, to the last complete statistical record made in 1910, statistical descriptions of the population have a long and vibrant tradition in the Habsburg Monarchy. They played an important role in policy-making while also providing regular occasions of encounter between the civil population and state authorities. Beyond the legitimate attention to ethnic statistics and to the particular role they played in nation-building in the region, this course will also investigate the outcomes of this specific practice in the state formation process.
The aim of the seminar is to provide students with basic knowledge of the key topics of the period, while introducing them to a more specific field of knowledge production and governance. They will be guided through the main secondary and primary sources, and the methodological issues related to them. The first half of the semester will be dedicated to a general introduction (production of ethnic, demographic, economic etc. statistics, actors involved, emergence of experts and evolution of practices, ideological and political implications, international standardization…). This should help the students to define their own questioning, which they will present in class during the second half of the semester. The oral presentation and the ensuing discussion will provide the basis of the seminar paper.

Assessment and permitted materials

The aim of the seminar is to learn to formulate a scientific work based on a historical topic. Students will choose a topic they will progressively elaborate along the semester. They will research primary sources as well as secondary literature, and learn how the exploit them. During the semester, they will have to present in 10-15 minutes a preliminary analysis of their reflection and sources, that will be discussed together with the other students. These oral presentations will be the basis of the seminar paper (Seminararbeit).

Students are expected to read all the assigned texts before each class, and to actively contribute to class discussion.
Assessment will be based on:
- the active participation to the class and the discussions
- the oral presentation and the final seminar paper

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Good reading knowledge of both English and German are required (for Erasmus students without sufficient knowledge of German, substitute texts in English will be provided).
Regular attendance (maximum 2 x unexcused absences), in contrary case extra assignments are due.
The evaluation is based on oral participation in class (20%), the oral presentation of a first draft (20%) and the final paper (60%). The seminar papers should be approx. 25 pages long: .000 (± 5%) signs including spaces, footnotes, title page, table of content and bibliography.
