Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

We are living in a text-based professional culture. In particular, being a historian or a social scientist means reading. Besides historical sources, many journal articles, essays, and books must be reviewed. In that process, one can sometimes lose one's bearings. This course is designed to help students effectively use their reading workload and match it with their questions and research direction.
Depending on the size of the group, all or only some participants will introduce their favorite global history book and provide a brief introduction to all students. In each unit, we will discuss these inputs, and discussants will provide helpful suggestions in light of the research question raised by the presenter. Moodle will serve to coordinate our interactions. Based on available book reviews, each student prepares three questions, and related considerations and suggestions will be posted in the Moodle student folder and discussed in class.
The professor provides general feedback throughout the shared learning progress.

Assessment and permitted materials

This course features individual presentations only to a limited degree; rather, the course requires constant written and oral participation as well as mutual reliability among participants throughout the semester.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Active participation (50%) and timely submission of assignments (25%) are essential for this course. Presentations only make up a limited share of the grading (25%).
Each assignment is scored separately, with grades ranging between Plus (+), Zero (0), and Minus (-). If an assignment is not uploaded on time, it counts as a Minus. Delayed submission of the weekly assignments is not foreseen.

Examination topics

Seminar-like course; no written exam.
