Aims, contents and method of the course

This course will familiarise students with different theoretical approaches and methodological tools in the fields of global history and global studies. The course has a twofold aim. First, it will present an overview of the current theoretical-methodological debates in the field of global history, including the relevance of comparison for transnational history, proper application of different scales and the perils of methodological nationalism. Weekly readings of the selected secondary literature will serve this purpose. Second, the course will provide an insight into concrete research steps and methods researchers utilise during their work. This will be done by the lecturers and guest speakers presenting examples from their own research experience, demonstrating theories and methods of global history in practice.

Assessment and permitted materials

The course grade will be based on: class participation (20 %), weekly assignments and presentations (20%), and the final essay (40%).

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

The course will be conducted in the English language. As the learning objectives of theory and methods classes are based on the collaborative approach and active engagement with class content, student participation in class discussions is expected and encouraged. The students are expected to engage in continuous work throughout the semester, which includes a weekly reading of assigned texts, taking part in collective discussions and preparing short assignments for each session. Additionally, students will present one of the readings in class and submit a short term paper addressing a methodological question or one of the covered research methods.
