Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
The Cabinet Office prepared the emperor's decisions during Franz Joseph's reign in a standardized form. Written submissions on nearly 500,000 matters were recorded, summarized, submitted to the emperor, and the resolutions carried out. Even after the reintroduction of the constitutional system, the emperor retained a central role for the, at least formal, execution of laws and decrees -- for both parts of the empire. The Cabinet Chancellery is therefore an organization whose written records make visible the governmental activity of the Habsburg Monarchy. In this workshop we will use the three main sources -- index, protocol books, written summaries -- to develop a new perspective on governmental activity within selected policy fields.
Assessment and permitted materials
You will be graded based on your active participation in the discussions during the seminar, the preparation of an independent research paper on a selected policy area, its oral presentation and written elaboration.
Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
The overall performance consists of three parts:
- Completion of a research project,
- oral presentation
- written paper.
Each of these parts must be positively graded in order to receive a positive overall grade. The following weighting applies to the overall grade: project maximum 60 points, oral presentation maximum 10 points, written elaboration maximum 30 points.
The grading follows the following scale: nicht genügend 1-49; genügend 50-62; befriedigend 63-76; gut 77-89; sehr gut 90-100.
