Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
In this seminar, we will discuss transdisciplinary perspectives on landscapes and memory considering the role of space in shaping of collective memory, and investigate the influence of different political, economic and social factors on the formation and transmission of narratives about the past and their use in the present, by examining different types of information present at the historical sites, in academic literature or in the media. The focus of the seminar will be the landscape of the Wachau, protected by UNESCO as a cultural landscape because of its long history of settlement and land cultivation. The picturesque towns in the Danube valley have long been popular by tourists for their wine and their historical attractions, from Venus of Willendorf to Roman and mediaeval ruins. But what meaning and relevance does this rich history still have for the inhabitants and visitors of the Wachau? What memories and narratives can still be encountered at historical sites around the Wachau, in tourist offers and various media, and what is hidden and forgotten, and why?Through a combination of group discussions and individual research projects, the attendees will be able to get hands-on experience with research in public history and practice critical analysis of various historical and contemporary sources and media, as well as practice academic writing and presentation. The main course language is English, but a good knowledge of German is required as the significant part of the literature and sources are in German.
