The Guided Reading covers medieval european primary sources and historiography. It is highly recommended to attend simultaneously VO "History of the Middle Ages" (Buc), which will provide context. Together, the two courses build up to a fuller view of the European Middle Ages.

Aims, contents and method of the course
Assessment and permitted materials
Based on attendance and participation in discussion, and on the regular writing assignment.
Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
To give the students some sense of the breadth of sources available to the historian of medieval Europe, introduce them to source analysis, and introduce them to some key controversies and modes of explaining historical phenomena of the Middle Ages.
