Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

As a global order, the Society of Jesus played an important role in European and transatlantic history in the early modern period. The course covers the history of the Society of Jesus from its foundation to its papal dissolution (1773), including its refoundation in 1814.
The aim is to read and interpret historical texts and historical sources based on episodes from the global history of the Jesuits, which contribute to a comprehensive understanding of early modern history and to the acquisition of basic methodological knowledge.

Assessment and permitted materials

Students are expected to read the texts and historical sources provided step by step on Moodle and to write and submit weekly written summaries (essays) on them. These will serve as a basis for the next session and for joint discussion. Participation in the discussion is also an important part of the course.
An excursion is planned (Vienna, University Church and Old Jesuit College), and participation in this is also compulsory.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

• regular attendance and participation in the excursion (two absences are accepted) (20%)
• submission of essays (10 essays) (40%)
• regular participation in discussions (or group work) (40%)

Examination topics

No exams.
